Hearing unusual sounds while driving can be unsettling, especially if they sound like something is loose or broken. A common concern is a tapping sound that occurs when driving over bumps, often described as a "tek-tek" noise. This sound usually points to issues with the car's suspension system.

Don't Ignore: A Tapping Sound Could Indicate Serious Problems

Adit, a Service Advisor at Mandiri Auto Klaten, emphasizes the importance of addressing unusual noises promptly. "It's crucial to determine the source of the sound and ensure the vehicle's safety. Wear and tear can lead to various issues," Adit explained.

One of the most concerning reasons for tapping sounds is loose wheel bolts, a potentially serious problem. "Any loose bolt or nut can create a gap. If exposed to vibrations or spinning, it can make a noise and eventually come loose. Never disregard any sounds you hear," Adit stressed.

While loose wheel bolts are a critical concern, other tapping noises may be less urgent and easier to fix. For instance, worn-out suspension components such as the rack steer, stabilizer, link arm, or shock absorbers can generate tapping noises. "If these suspension parts wear down, like cracked rubber or thin bushings, you might hear noises. Although the car may still be drivable, it will likely be uncomfortable and noisy," Adit added.

When encountering tapping sounds, especially on bumpy roads, the recommended course of action is to investigate the source and determine what repairs are necessary. A professional mechanic can diagnose the problem and recommend the appropriate solution.
