It's a common sight on the road: motorcyclists puffing away as they ride. However, this seemingly harmless habit poses a significant danger to both the rider and those around them.
Impaired Focus and Concentration
Smoking while riding has a detrimental impact on focus and concentration. This distraction can easily lead to accidents. Viktor Assani, Head of Road Safety and Motorsport at the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), emphasizes the crucial role of focus in motorcycle riding. “Motorcycles require full balance and focus to operate safely,” he explains. “Smoking distracts you, hindering your hands and mouth from focusing on controlling the bike.”
The Danger Extends Beyond the Rider
The dangers of smoking while riding are not limited to the rider alone. The wind can easily carry burning cigarette embers, potentially igniting flammable materials and causing fires. The smoke itself also poses a nuisance to other riders.
“Not only is it dangerous for other riders, but smoking while riding also hinders your ability to quickly respond to emergency situations on the road,” adds Viktor.
Legal Ramifications
Smoking while riding not only puts lives at risk but also breaks the law. Indonesia’s Law No. 22 of 2009 regarding Traffic and Road Transportation prohibits such behavior. Violators face penalties for their actions.
Prioritize Safety: Avoid Smoking
To ensure road safety for everyone, motorcyclists are strongly encouraged to avoid dangerous activities like smoking. Prioritize complete focus while riding to safeguard your own safety and the safety of others.
